Schnauzer Grooming

Some Basic Tips to Help in Your Schnauzer Grooming
Schnauzer grooming is not the easiest task in the world, but a well-groomed Schnauzer is delightful to behold, and should make an owner happy and proud.
If you are a first-time owner of a Schnauzer, grooming might not have been on your mind when you got your pup. But when he starts fluffing out all over, you'll want to know how to keep up with it. If you purchased your pup from a breeder, he or she may have given you recommendations for groomers. Otherwise you will need to choose a reputable groomer, or groom your dog yourself.
You should get your pup used to grooming as soon as he arrives at your home. If you properly train your Schnauzer, grooming won't be such an issue for him when he goes to have it done later. You need to be firm but kind. Make sure your first sessions are very short, since his attention span isn't very long yet. Praise him when he does well, and gently correct him when he doesn't.
The grooming tools you will purchase if you plan to do your own grooming, should be the best you can afford, or you will constantly be replacing broken tools. A grooming table is an excellent investment, and electric clippers are the other high-dollar item. For proper Schnauzer grooming, you will also need two brushes, two combs, nail clippers, two pairs of scissors and a stripping knife.
Grooming tables are a valuable tool and they are made in different styles and sizes, to accommodate different breeds. You can improvise by using plywood to build your own “box”, and add a rubber mat to the top, for secure footing for your pup. Purchase your combs and brushes from a reputable dealer, not at a discount store. Your tools will last a long time if you buy them well-made, and take care of them.
Work with your pup on your grooming table. Be patient with him, and reward him with praise and kibble when he does well. You do need to let him know when you're not pleased with what he does, but try to make the sessions as positive as you can.
Use your fingers to remove tangles or knots from your pup's fur. Avoid using the combs on him until the mats are gone, otherwise you'll make him uncomfortable, and pull the hair out or break it. After he's de-tangled, use the comb to get the lay of the hair the way you want it, and then use the brushes for that final winning look.
Whether you plan to show, or just love your pup as a pet, Schnauzer grooming will help keep your friend more happy and healthy, so he can be your companion for years to come.
